A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.
There are over 65 million refugees globally – that is one out of every 113 people on Earth. Over 50% of refugees are under 18 years old.
The average time spent in a refugee camp is 17 years. Some people are born and die without ever escaping life in a camp.
"If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together."
~ Lilla Watson

One Light has many meanings.
One light in the darkness is all that is needed to give hope and shine the way, both metaphorically and literally. This was especially true on the shores of Lesvos; at night we would stand on the beaches and shine one small light that would guide the refugee families in perilous rubber rafts to safe landing.
Individually, we may not know what we can do to have a big impact in the world, but in any moment each of us can choose to be a single light—a light of compassion, kindness, courage, connection, generosity—of love, to whomever is around.
There is a saying that from one candle, many candles are lit. I believe we can be that one light that sparks a global shift, both as individuals and as an organization.
When we were rescuing refugees in Lesvos, I noticed this amazing light shining from the children’s eyes, we all did. I believe we all have this same light shining within us – call it life, spirit, the miracle, the mystery, whatever it is – it is the same no matter how different we appear on the outside, inside us is One Light.
Thank YOU for choosing to be a light!
